Last home game of the season ends in defeat

Van der Vaart scored Tottenham's first. Photograph: Paul Ellis/AFP/Getty Images
Liverpool's final home game of the season ended in a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham that had its fair share of controversy surrounding, none other than, Howard Webb.

Tottenham's first victory at Anfield since 1993 takes them one point above Liverpool into fifth place and they now hold the ace to qualify for the Europa League. With one game remaining in this season, Spurs look to be favorites to seal the final European place next weekend against Birmingham City while Liverpool play at Aston Villa, who beat Arsenal 2-1 today at the Emirates.

Liverpool started the match slowly and it was Tottenham who gained a foothold in the game. A ninth minute corner provided Van der Vaart with his opportunity when the corner was cleared to the edge of the box and his strike, took a small deflection off Glen Johnson as it, sailed over the head of Pepe Reina. The goal happened to be Van der Vaart's 13th league goal in what has been an impressive first season for the attacking midfielder.

Howard Webb awards a controversial penalty
Liverpool began to put Tottenham under pressure as the second half came to a close but they never had any clear cut opportunity. To be fair, Tottenham defended well and looked very solid at the back.

However, the game didn't end without controversy as Howard Webb has come under heavy scrutiny after his decision to award a very soft penalty in the 55th minute to Tottenham. John Flanagan appeared to make contact with Steven Piennar outside the box as they collided shoulder to shoulder. Momentum was probably Flanagan's second worst enemy in the situation, Webb being number one, as it made the challenge look a bit worse than it was. Luka Modric made no mistake from the spot though as he took the penalty well to give Spurs a 2-0 lead.

In the end Tottenham deserved their win. Liverpool didn't play any where near what was expected and they never really created any substantial chances. Tottenham was able to soak up any pressure Liverpool created and managed to shut down the dangerous Luis Suarez.

Dalglish accepted Tottenham was the better team and they deserved their victory,

"They probably played better than us on the day," Dalglish, who signed a three-year deal to remain as manager earlier this week, told Sky Sports.

"I don't think Pepe (Reina) had too many saves to make, but then we never did enough at the other end either to make it decisive for us"

He also disagreed with Webb's penalty decision, as has many, but didn't elaborate on what he told Sky Sports,

"It wasn't even a foul so it doesn't matter if it was inside or outside the area, but for me maybe it's best to do a Moyesy and not come out to do a press conference."

In other news around football, West Ham have been relegated after blowing a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 to Wigan, who now have a life line heading into the final weekend of the season. Chelsea and Newcastle drew 2-2 at the Bridge, Fulham won 2-0 over Birmingham City and Rangers claimed the Scottish Premier League title after a 5-1 thrashing of Kilmarnock.

Dalglish: Lucas deserves a song from the KOP

Lucas playing for Liverpool last season
Liverpool manager, Kenny Dalglish, believes Lucas finally deserves his own song from the famous KOP. He has called on the supporters to reward Lucas for the brilliant form he has been in this season.

Lucas wasn't exactly loved by the supporters when he first arrived and he looked set for an exit in the last couple of years, but the Brazilian has really turned it around and can be considered one of Liverpool's players of the season for his fine form.

Kenny talked ahead of a pre-match conference and said: "He's been in good form since I came in here. He's also signed an extended contract and is playing really well. Him and Jay (Spearing) have got a really good partnership in the middle of the pitch."

"It would be nice if supporters could think up a song for Lucas as a reward for the fantastic work he has done recently. I don't know what it could be but there must be something there for him."

"He's only a young boy as well. He's played lots of games for a young boy. He's really developed. He's in the Brazil team and that's a good enough testament for us."

"What he has done for us is very important and he's been brilliant since I came in. You can see he has belief in his own performances. You can see that getting in the Brazil team and being settled - his wife having a  little boy - means his whole world is happy at the moment and that is reflected on the pitch."

I won't lie, I wasn't the biggest Lucas fan when he first arrived and at times I did give him a fair share of stick for his performances. However, I'm really impressed with how well he has matured and improved over the last 18 months, which have been a really tough 18 months around the club, and he has also shown he can be a leader. I for one will be looking forward to whatever song the KOP can think of as they are always brilliant. Congrats to Lucas on his baby boy and the best of luck to him in the future. YNWA!

WAG of the day!

Rosaria Connavo

Cannavo currently dates retired footballer Christian Pannuci who played for numerous clubs including Milan, Real Madrid, Inter and Roma. She was also on the arm of the short tempered Antonio Cassano. Many people might not know Cassano but for those who do might question whats a girl like this doing with him but then again you might still be mesmerized by her looks. She’s famous in Italy for her skills as a ballerina and her appearances on a number of their very strange television shows. One includes trying to balance herself on a board while wearing very revealing clothing, can't go wrong with that. I could of chosen a number of images to display here but some were too revealing, so go on and have a click down below.

BREAKING NEWS: Dalglish signs 3-year contract

Kenny Dalglish: Liverpool's manager
Kenny Dalglish has signed a new 3-year contract that will see him in charge at the club until the end of the 2013-2014 season. Dalglish has taken Liverpool from 4 points above the relegation zone to within a win of securing European football next season.

Liverpool have been in fine from under Dalglish who took over in January after Roy Hodgson was sacked. At that time Liverpool were 12th in the league table and just above relegation. Since then Liverpool has climbed all the way up to 5th and 2 points above Tottenham, who they play this weekend at Anfield. If Liverpool beat Tottenham at home they will secure a spot in the Europa League.

Steve Clarke, Kenny's first appointment when he arrived, has also signed a 3-year deal along with Dalglish.

"It's a great reward for the work that's been done, not just by me but Steve, Sammy (Lee), the players and the people on the terraces and everyone else inside the club, including the owners," Dalglish told the club's website

"We said at the outset if we stick together and work together then it makes it easier to produce better results and I think that is the main reason why results have improved."

Liverpool will look to carry their recent from into next season and push on for a top four place. Dalglish will also be looking to improve the squad knowing he will be the clubs long term manager. If Liverpool's current form is anything to expect next season then anything is possible.

WAG of the day!

Caroline Celico

Celico met Kaká way back in 2001, and married the Real Madrid star in 2005. They are high school sweethearts which appears to be very rare these days for footballers. Celico’s not the typical WAG, and she doesn’t have the drop dead curves of some others on this list, but she’s damn cute and from all reports surprisingly normal compared to her contemporary soccer wives. She has two children with Kaka and she was only 18 when they married back in 2005.

Spearing earns England call up

Liverpool midfielder, Jay Spearing, has earned a called up to the provisional 40 man U-21 squad which is taking part in the European Championships this summer.

Spearing, who is 22, still qualifies to play at the U-21 level and despite the squad being announced a few weeks ago, which also includes Liverpool forward Andy Carroll, he has been called up to replace injured Mark Davies.

Spearing has been in terrific form since coming into Liverpool's first team for the injured Steven Gerrard. His wonderful form has also earned him a new contract which was reported last week.

The European Championships will take place in Denmark this year and begins June 11th.

Spearing definitely deserves a call up and I believe he isn't too far off being called up to the senior squad. I wish Jay the best of luck in Denmark this summer.

Liverpool favorites to sign Ashley Young

Young celebrating for Aston Villa
Liverpool are looking to make a splash in the transfer market this summer in order to return to the Premier League's elite group of clubs. Wingers are a high priority and the club look to be targeting the Aston Villa wide man.

Young has been targeted by a few clubs, most notably Liverpool's rivals, Manchester United, but Liverpool look to be favorites to seal the deal. United are heavily in debt and it is unsure if they will be able to produce the money needed to sign the player. Damien Comolli is a big fan of Young and believes he is what the club need in order to move forward. However, Aston Villa are said to be unwilling to sell their star.

The asking price is believed to be around £14million which should be able to persuade Villa to sell. This would be a great signing for Liverpool, especially after signing Andy Carroll in the summer, they need wide players who can deliver quality crosses into the box. Liverpool has been notorious for lacking in the wide areas and it is certainly a position the club need to improve on.

Jose Enrique set to join Liverpool: Transfer Rumors

Enrique: Liverpool target
Transfer rumors linking Newcastle left back, Jose Enrique, with Liverpool have resurfaced.

It has been heavily publicized that Liverpool need a left back and reports have often linked The Reds with Enrique. Kenny Dalglish is a noted fan of the Spaniard and has been sizing up a move for the player.

Some reports have stated Newcastle are looking for Jay Spearing, Liverpool's young midfielder, in return for Enrique but those reports look to have been squashed with Spearing signing a new contract with the Anfield outfit in the last week.

During a Norwegian television interview, former Liverpool manager Phil Thompson admitted that "Jose Enrique to Liverpool is a done deal." There is no doubt that Enrique would be a welcomed upgrade at the club as they push for the top four next season.

It is believed that Newcastle are looking for £15m in exchange for the player but there are no indications of contact between the two clubs so this transfer still remains a rumor despite what Phil Thompson thinks.

Pacheco could return to Loftus Road

Pacheco playing for Norwich
Daniel Pacheco has said he would be willing to return to Norwich if first team opportunities at Liverpool are not available.

The Spanish forward, who was apart of Barcelona's youth academy, enjoyed a short loan spell with the Canaries where he scored two goals in six appearances for the club. He helped Norwich gain promotion back to the Premier League and this could tempt the player to rejoin to club for first team opportunities.

Pacheco graduated from Liverpool's academy in 2009 and featured under Rafael Benitez but was never in Roy Hodgson's plans.

Pacheco told reporters,

"I have to go back to Liverpool and see how the summer goes,"

"But I would love to come back here if I'm not going to get games at Liverpool."

I believe it would suit Liverpool to send Pacheco on a season-long loan to Norwich. With their recent promotion he will get some vital Premier League experience and some much needed first team football. However, under no circumstances should they let him go on a permanent deal, he is a young striker who has a lot of potential to make an impact in the Liverpool first team.

South American delight as Liverpool move up to 5th

Liverpool celebrate Maxi's second
Liverpool move up into 5th spot after a wonderful performance against an in form Fulham side at Craven Cottage. A hat-trick from Maxi Rodriquez and some memorizing play from Luis Suarez carried Liverpool to a 5-2 victory.

Maxi just can not stop scoring in recent weeks as everything he hits finds the back of the net. He netted his second hat-trick in 3 games to give Liverpool the result they needed. It wasn't long until the Argentinian found himself on the score sheet as his first minute strike found the back of the net after some mediocre defending by Fulham. Suarez's strike was deflected and Mark Schwarzer scrambled to clear but it fell straight to Maxi's feet as he made no mistake with the finish.

Liverpool were fantastic in the opening minutes of the game as they continually pressured Fulham into mistakes. Just six minutes after Maxi's first, he doubled his tally when a cross was stood up to the back post and Maxi lost his defender as his left footed volley flew past the keeper to give Liverpool a dream start.

Fulham's terrible start continued as a howler from Schwarzer gifted Liverpool their third goal. Dirk Kuyt's shot from the edge of the box rolled under the keeper as Kuyt ran off celebrating his 5th goal in as many games.

Maxi scoring the opening goal
Fulham did start brightly in the second half and put Liverpool under pressure. They found themselves back in the game when Dembele's effort went in on the 57th minute. Fulham continued to pile on the pressure as they went looking for another but it was Liverpool who scored next when Maxi rounded off his hat-trick with a great 20-yard strike. The goal left Fulham depleted and ended the game as a contest.

The scoring wasn't over though as Luis Suarez scored a well deserved goal for his man of the match performance.  Suarez was played in on goal from a great through ball from Johnjo Shelvey and the Uruguayan finished with great composure as he rounded Schwarzer and tapped the ball across the line. However, the goal of the match was Steve Sidwell's late consolation goal when his half volley flew into Pepe Reina's goal from 25-yards out.

Luis Suarez was undoubtedly the man of the match and his performance was so immense that he beat out hat-trick hero Maxi Rodriguez. Suarez never stopped running as he continued to run at defenders and make them uncomfortable time and time again.

After the match, Kenny said Suarez is playing beyond the clubs wildest dreams,

"He was fantastic. He was running as hard at the end as he was at the beginning. He was causing them all sorts of problems."

"He's really settled in and that's a credit to him and his family. They've settled into the area, settled into the football and I don't think in our wildest dreams we thought he'd settle in so quickly and take to English football like he has done."

Liverpool will now look to this weekend as they take on Tottenham at Anfield. The winner looks likely to take 5th spot but with Manchester City losing this weekend both clubs still have a chance at the final Champions League place. It's unlikely but then again, this is football, and anything can happen.

LIVE COMMENTARY: Fulham 2 - 5 Liverpool

Match Report to follow but Liverpool now move above Spurs once again for 5th place who will play next weekend at Anfield. Liverpool have been brilliant tonight as Kenny Dalglish has his team playing some wonderful football.

Joe Cole is now coming on for hat-trick hero Maxi Rodriguez who goes off to a standing ovation from the away supporters

81 -  Fulham try to regain their composure as they play the ball around in the midfield and have now won a corner

Liverpool are putting in a great performance without arguably their best player Steven Gerrard.

73 - Fulham look shocked as the Liverpool fans are filling the ground with songs for the hat-trick hero Maxi Rodriguez

71 - GOAL! - Maxi hits an absolute screamer into the top corner for his second hat-trick in 3 games. WHAT A HIT! That surely kills the game as a contest

70 - The corner is a poor one as it is cleared and Fulham try to break but is broken up by the Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher

69 - Suarez spins away from Hangeland and wins a corner off the Fulham defender

Andy Johnson comes on for Gudjohnsen as Mark Hughes looks to be going for it

63 - Bobby Zamora has made an impact as he now wins a corner which is once again cleared off the line. Liverpool look second best now

61 - Salcido is now into the referee's book after earning a yellow card for a foul on Suarez

Interesting fact for this weekend, all Premier League teams have scored as no team have managed to keep a clean sheet.

60 - Fulham are still threatening as they have a free kick punched away by Pepe Reina

57 - GOAL! - Fulham get back into the game through Dembele who slots the ball into the far bottom corner from just inside the box

57 - Shelvey's free kick is poor and now Fulham push out of defense.

56 - Kuyt wins a free kick down near the right corner flag

55 - Johnson is played down the right side who puts in a poor cross as he slips and Liverpool win a throw-in

54 - Liverpool finally get a hold of the ball as they play a string of passes together in the midfield.

53 - Fulham are dominating the possession so far in the second half as Liverpool are trying to get a hold of the ball. Suarez wins a free kick off Hangeland as he continues to cause him problems

52 - Gudjohnsen has a shot that goes wide. Fulham are continuing their strong start to the second half

51 - Fulham win a throw-in deep into Liverpool territory but Liverpool win it back and push out

49 -  Fulham's free kick causes problems for the Liverpool defense and then Dempsey has a shot that sails over the bar. Better start by Fulham, just what they needed

Meireles looks like he pulled his hamstring as he comes off and makes way for Johnjo Shelvey.

47 - Fulham try to get a foothold in the possession stats as they win a free kick

46 -  Liverpool kick off

Fulham bring on Bobby Zamora as they look to pull some goals back

The story of the first half has to be Liverpool's great movement and passing. It has caused Fulham so many problems as Luis Suarez has terrorized them all evening. Fulham have to come out and put on a show for their fans as they have been pretty poor. Liverpool look to be cruising to 5th place.

The half-time whistle puts Fulham out of their misery for the time being

45+ - Once again great movement by Liverpool down the right side but Kuyt's pass is over hit and goes out for a goal kick

45+ - Dempsey earns himself a yellow after he loses the ball and takes out Spearing out of frustration

45 - Free header from Steve Sidwell but it is straight at Reina. There will be 3 minutes of stoppage time.

44 - Liverpool have a prolonged spell of possession that is broken up by a Fulham throw-in. Dempsey then has a shot from 25 yards out but goes wide of the post

41 - Fulham can't deal with Reina's long kicks as it once again causes problems for their defense. Suarez has a shot but its a comfortable one for the keeper

39 - Lucas has another shot as it falls to Kuyt who plays it into the box only to be cleared.

38 - Suarez is in the penalty area once again but his shot is blocked for a Liverpool corner. The corner is cleared pretty comfortably by Fulham

29 - Fulham win a throw-in down in the corner and plays in a nice cross that is cleared by Johnson

Harry Redknapp, Tottenham boss, is in the stands tonight. Most likely scouting Liverpool and he can expect the same. Harry should worry.

26 - Young fullback, Flanagan, found himself in the box played in by Maxi but the bounce takes it out of play.

25 - Suarez once again gets past the defender easily and is fouled.

24 - Great movement by Liverpool again and it looks to easy for them. Suarez crosses the ball to Maxi who can not connect properly and sails over the ball. Fulham can't handle it

23 - Suarez gets around Hangeland and finds himself on the by-line but goes for glory and blasts the ball across goal

22 - Another spell of possession for Fulham in the midfield is broken up by Liverpool once again.

21 - Murphy looks for Dempsey but cleared by Carragher

19 - Its all Liverpool at the moment as Fulham can not get a foothold in the game

16 - GOAL! - An absolute howler from Mark Schwarzer as Kuyt's shot rolls under the goal keeper. 3-0 in 16 minutes and it looks game over already

14 - Fulham enjoy some possession for the first time in the match

12 - Skrtel is down on he ground with what looks to be an elbow to his face

11 - Nothing doing from the corner but Liverpool have another won by Suarez

9 - Liverpool win a corner after some more great play down the wing.

Fulham's defending has been shocking to start with. This will be difficult to over come after their poor start.

7 -  GOAL! - Maxi can not stop scoring. Great work down the right wing as Glen Johnson crosses the ball to the back post and Maxi hammers it in on the volley.

5 - Liverpool win a corner, play it short and Jay Spearing has a shot at goal but saved comfortably.

4 - The game is definitely lively to start off with. Liverpool fans already voicing themselves around the ground.

2 - Danny Murphy see's yellow after a poor challenge on Lucas in the midfield.

1 - GOAL! - Suarez crosses the ball but takes a deflection. Not cleared and Maxi is there to tap the ball in for a wonderful start for Liverpool.

Elena Bonzanni is an Italian TV presenter and model. When she's not out modelling you can find her cheering on her boyfriend Valon Behrami who plays for Italian Serie A team, Fiorentina. I'm sure she helped ease the pain when he was stuck playing with West Ham a few months ago. Behrami also happens to be nicknamed the Swedish David Beckham, I don't know who would want that nickname though. One thing is certain, I don't think I would be able to have clear thoughts if I was around her.

Carragher set to move into second in Liverpool's appearance list

Tonight Jamie Carragher will look to move into second, behind Ian Callaghan, in Liverpool's all time appearance list for the club.

It will be Carragher's 666th appearance for a club when he takes his place at the heart of Liverpool's defense. He will be captaining the side in the absence of Steven Gerrard and will look to celebrate with a victory and all three points.

Carragher is moving past Liverpool legends Emlyn Hughes and Ray Clemence for sole possession of second spot but it is very unlikely Carragher can catch Ian Callaghan's record 857 appearances for the club. Carragher, who has one year renaming on his contract, will be looking to take up a coaching role at the club when he retires.

Liverpool manager, Kenny Dalglish, still believes Carragher has a lot to offer,

“It is a great accolade for him to be the second in the table for most appearances as a Liverpool player. He has been here a while and hopefully he will be here for a lot longer." said the Liverpool manager.

“I am sure he has one or two miles left in him yet.”

Liverpool play Fulham tonight at Craven Cottage in an 8 o'clock kick off.

Dalglish is expected to be named permanant manager

Kenny Dalglish is set to be confirmed as the permanent manager of Liverpool FC by the end of this month. Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool's owners, have said they will wait til the end of the season to make any decisions about the manager position, a decision they have stuck by.

Four years seems to be the expected contract length. Since Kenny has taken over Liverpool in January, the club has been on a great run of form. Over the 13 games he has been in charge, Liverpool has averaged 2.23 points per game which is only second to Chelsea's 2.46 points per game.

Premier League results for Sunday, May 8th

Sunday brought a lot of action as Arsenal fell to an abysmal 3-1 defeat to Stoke City, Manchester United all but secured their 19th league title and Wolves took a giant step towards safety.

Wolves 3 - 1 West Brom:
Wolves gained a massive 3 points in the relegation battle as they secured the win at home against West Brom. Steven Fletcher was the hero for Wolves as he scored two massive goals to give his side a pretty comfortable victory. West Brom managed to pull one back on the hour mark through their inform striker, Peter Odemwingie, who scored from the penalty spot. West Brom had chances to make the game more interesting but in the end Wolves did enough to hold onto the three points and move outside the relegation zone.

Stoke City 3 - 1 Arsenal:
Stoke gave no indications that they had their minds set on the FA Cup Final with a great win over Arsenal. Arsenal dominated the possession but it was Stoke who had the clinical touch in front of goal as they went 2-0 up before half-time. Goals from Kenwyen Jones and the former Arsenal and Liverpool man, Jermaine Pennant gave Arsenal a mountain to climb. Arsenal did make it interesting at the end though as they pulled one back through Van Persie just 10 minutes from time. Stoke didn't panic though as they went up field just after the restart and made sure of the points through Walters. It was a pretty lack luster performance from Arsenal as their poor form since March continues. Stoke will now look to push on and upset Manchester City in the cup final this Saturday.

Manchester 2 - 1 Chelsea:
Manchester United moved to within one point of their 19th league title with a very important 2-1 win over Chelsea. United didn't have to wait long to find themselves ahead, just 40 seconds into the match Hernandez found himself one-on-one with Cech and the Mexican didn't disappoint as he finished well. Soon United doubled their lead after Vidic headed in from a short corner from Giggs. Lampard gave the away side some hope as he scored with 20 minutes left but it wasn't enough as United ran out the winners. The league is surely wrapped up with United 6 points ahead and only 2 games left to play.

Pepe Reina looks for Liverpool milestone

Reina is looking for a new Liverpool milestone this Monday as he faces Fulham. The last time Reina failed to feature for Liverpool in a Barclay's Premier League game was back in 2007 against Charlton when he was rested ahead of Liverpool's Champions League final that month.

Reina looks set to play in his 150th consecutive Premier League game when he plays against Fulham, Monday night. If he plays, which is expected, it will be the 7th longest consecutive streak by any player in Liverpool's history.

Reina became Liverpool's fastest goalkeeper to 100 clean sheets in the league back in December when he broke Ray Clemence's record. He achieved this feat in 198 games league games, 19 games less than Clemence.

Amaia Salamanca

We already featured a WAG that belonged to Real Madrid superstar, Sergio Ramos, but once again he out does himself with Salamanca. Amaia is another one of Ramos' former girlfirend's and is a Spanish actress who is best known for her role as Catalina Marcos. I have no idea who her role is but one thing is for certain, she probably looks good playing her. Besides acting, Amaia, works as a model in photo shoots, most likely what she is doing in the above photo. In 2006 she was ranked as number FIVE in Maxim's magazine, "Top 100 Hot List", between Jessica Alba and Scarlett Johansson. Can't go wrong with that list.

Premier League results for Saturday, May 7th

It's match week 36 and it has so far lived up to expectations. Saturday saw Everton upset Manchester City, Newcastle and Sunderland coming away with 3 points and Blackpool earning a vital point away at White Hart Lane against Tottenham.

Everton 2 - 1 Manchester City:
Everton came back to upset Manchester City and make them wait to guarantee Champions League football next season. City got off to a great start and took the lead 28 minutes in when Yaya Toure was played in by David Silva and powered the ball into the net past Tim Howard. The host weren't down and out though as they came back in the second half to score two headed goals from Sylvain Distin and Leon Osman within 7 minutes of each other.

Aston Villa 1 - 1 Wigan:
Wigan earned a very important point away from home against Aston Villa.  The point lifts them out of the bottom three for the time being. Wigan took the lead through their star, Charles N'Zogbia, 10 minutes in when he slotted the ball across the line and into the corner. Villa fought back through Ashley Young, who curled the ball into the opposite corner, just 7 minutes later.

Bolton 1 - 2 Sunderland:
The story has to be Bolton's poor run of form as they fell at home to Sunderland for their 5th loss in 8 games. Bolo Zenden, former Liverpool player, gave Sunderland the lead as he rounded Bolton's shot stopper, Jaaskelainen, and eased the ball over the line. Fans thought Bolton earned a point when they scored in the 87th minute through Ivan Klasnic but Sunderland found the winner in added time with and own goal from Zat Knight.

Tottenham 1 - 1 Blackpool:
In a hectic final 15 minutes we seen two penalty's, one penalty save and two goals. Charlie Adam scored for Blackpool from the spot but it took him two attempts as he had his first penalty saved by Gomes but slotted home the second just a minute later. Blackpool looked set to steal all 3 point but Jermain Defoe smashed home the equalizer four minutes from time from the edge of the box.

Newcastle 2 - 1 Birmingham:
Newcastle came away with the victory at home after their 2-1 win over Birmingham. Newcastle took the lead 35 minutes in when Ameobi scored from the spot after Liam Ridgewell handled the ball in the area. It wasn't long until Newcastle doubled their lead when Steven Taylor headed home just moments later. Birmingham made it interesting by scoring just before half-time but they couldn't find a way back into the game in the second half.

West Ham 1 - 1 Blackburn:
One team will look at the game as a point gained while the other will look at it as two points dropped. West Ham failed to put in the performance that was expected of them as they fell behind to Blackburn 12 minutes in when Jason Roberts scored from close range. West Ham looked to be sent packing empty handed until Thoms Hitzlsperger scored from a corner just 10 minutes from time. West Ham still sit 3 points from safety as they failed to capitalize on this home game against a struggling Blackburn side.

WAG of the day!

Valentina Zambrotta

Valentina is married to World Cup winner Gianluca Zambrotta who plays for Italian side AC Milan. Despite living in glamorous Milan, she’s no showgirl. She’s an athlete in her own right. She’s a downhill inline skater, which apparently is a real sport. Somewhere. Despite that she certainly knows how to wear a bikini which brings out her huge baps eyes.

Preview of the Premiership

The next 4 days in the Premier League will make or break many teams as they battle it out for vital points. Chelsea play at Manchester United in what looks like a winner takes all match up for the title. While on the other end of the table 5 teams teams will be looking to avoid relegation by picking up all 3 points.

Match of the weekend: Manchester United vs. Chelsea FC
With out a doubt this has to be the match of the weekend as these to heavyweights battle it out for the crown. Manchester United come into the match on a high after making it through to the Champions League final but had that disappointing loss last weekend to Arsenal. Chelsea on the other hand come in on great form after taking 16 points from a possible 18 in their last 6 matches. However, Chelsea were pretty poor against United in the Champions League last month. I feel a scoring draw will be most likely but I'm feeling bold (and don't want United to win the league).

Match prediction: Manchester United 1 - 2 Chelsea

Liverpool face off against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Monday night in what looks to be a very tight match up. Liverpool are 2nd in the form guide while Fulham are 7th after coming off back to back 3-0 wins. Liverpool need to win if they are to claim 5th spot and keep the pressure on Tottenham.

Wigan travel to Aston Villa and desperately need something out of the game if they are to avoid relegation. Both have been in decent form as of late and Wigan are well capable of putting in a performance if they show up. With the absence of Gerard Houllier, Villa have had a tough month and will have to put in a good display if they are to shut down Charles N'Zogbia and his Wigan side.

Reebok stadium will be home for Sunderland this weekend as the travel to battle with Bolton. Both teams don't have much to play for but this might provide an exciting match up as neither will worry about the repercussions. Bolton have played well all season long while Sunderland have struggled in recent months. This tie could go either way, tough one to call.

Manchester City play twice this match week as they do battle away at Everton on Saturday and face a stern test at home to Tottenham on Tuesday night. These two games are important for City as they can secure their 4th spot with a win. While Everton doesn't have much to play for, they have been in great form of late and could cause an upset to City's party at Goodison Park. Tottenham on the other hand face a struggling Blackpool at home. Blackpool look almost certain to go down if they don't manage to take anything from this game but Spurs will be looking to regain 5th spot from Liverpool and anything less than a win will not do for their fans.

Birmingham City are not safe from relegation but will feel confident in their match against Newcastle. The League Cup winners travel to St. James' Park looking for a win and if results go their way they will be safe for another season at the top flight. Meanwhile, Newcastle will be looking to put on a show for their fans as they have been poor in recent weeks. With rumors their left back, Enrique, could be leaving, they will want to finish as high as possible.

Bottom club West Ham look doomed if they don't win this relegation match up at home. Blackburn sit 6 points ahead of West Ham but only 3 points from the relegation places. Under pressure manager, Avram Grant, will be looking for a performance from his side as they look to fight the drop. Both side will be looking to pull out all the stops.

Another relegation threatened side, Wolves, look to win at home against an in form West Brom side. Mick McCarhty's men will need a win at home if they are to pull themselves to saftey. They currently sit 1 point from safety with 2 games remaining after this. West Brom on the other hand see themselves in great form and have really pushed on since the arrival of Roy Hodgson.

Finally, Arsenal travel to Stoke City in a match that would of held more meaning if Arsenal didn't slip up against Bolton a few weeks back. They find themselves out of the title race but will look to prove their determination against a difficult Stoke City side. Stoke might not be looking at this match with too much importance as they have nothing to really play for in the Premier League, they surely must have the FA Cup final in the back of their minds.

Jay Spearing rewared with new deal

Jay Spearing against Real Madrid
The young midfielder has been rewarded for his fine form with a new three-year deal at the club. Spearing has formed a very impressive partnership with Lucas in the center of the park and has capitalized on the absence of his captain, Steven Gerrard, through injury.

Damien Comolli, Liverpool's Director of Football, said:

"He has worked hard and has done very well"

"He won his place in the team on merit and has showed in the last games that he can raise his game to what we need."

This weekend the youngster looks set to make his 14th start for Liverpool's first team this season. Kenny has taken notice as Spearing has put in some very strong performances against Arsenal and Manchester City. In the last month Kenny has injected many youngsters into the team including Jay Spearing, Jack Robinson and John Flanagan.

Spearing was set to enter the final year of his contract in the up coming season but, like another youngster Martin Kelly, he has pledged his long term future to Liverpool with his new contract.

Apparently former Liverpool striker has problems finishing in other fields

Fernando Torres, Chelsea's £50 million signing, who just scored his first goal for his new club last week, is apparently having trouble finishing in another area of his life. Olalla won't be to happy if that is the case and with a lurking John Terry, Torres better watch out.

Kenny interested in German international

Mario Gomez celebrating for Germany
According to Sports.co.uk, Liverpool manager, Kenny Dalglish, is looking into making a move for Bayern Munich center forward Mario Gomez.

Reports have suggested the striker was linked with a move to Anfield in the January transfer window before Kenny opted to swoop for Ajax's Luis Suarez. The German international was also linked to the club last summer when Roy Hodgson was still in charge.

Despite landing Suarez and Carroll in January, and being linked with a number of other strikers, the Liverpool manager is still interested in bringing Gomez to the Merseyside club. Dalglish is considering a summer swoop for the Munich forward having contacted Bayern  regarding the availability of the striker this summer, according to a source close to the player.

After a disappointing league finish for Munich the club looks to be set for an overhaul. Gomez scored 24 goals in the Bundesliga this year and is nominated for the European Golden Shoe, an award most likely going to Messi of Barcelona.

I feel Gomez would be a good signing for Liverpool if he is available at the right price. He is strong in the air and has a decent finish in him. At 25 he certainly has plenty of years in front of him and the Bundesliga is probably the most similar league out there compared to the Premier League so he might be able to adapt easily. There are probably better options available but Gomez could turn out to be a great signing.

WAG of the day!

Melanie Slade

Slade was thrown into the spot light when her boyfriend Tho Walcott (Arsenal) was called up into the English National team for the 2006 World Cup. Just like that she was WAG royalty and spending time with the biggest names in English football, and all this, before she turned 18. Despite WAG status, Slade herself came out and said she did not want to be the typical WAG who is there for a bit of eye candy. She is studying physiotherapy in London and taking part in campaigns against cancer. One things for sure, shes not a bad sight.

Liverpool target Sevilla's £15m star

Sevilla star, Alvaro Negredo, has been a target of Steve Bruce's Sunderland and now looks to be on the radar of Liverpool.

The former Real Madrid striker has scored more than 60 goals in just under 4 seasons and looks set to leave Sevilla after this season. Negredo's recent form has caught the eye of Spanish National team manager Del Bosque and has himself on the brink of a call up.

However, Kenny will look to strengthen the left side of Liverpool's midfield before he moves for any more attacking options. Negredo would be a great player to have to keep Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll on their toes as Liverpool look to bounce back next season.

Liverpool owners John Henry and Tom Werner serve up some hot chocolate

Liverpool owners,John Henry and Tom Werner, serve some free hot chocolate to those who stuck around in the early hours of the morning for a Red Sox game at Fenway Park.

The Boston Red Sox and the Los Angeles Angels did battle at Fenway Park in a game that lasted nearly 7 hours because of torrential rain. The game started around 7pm and was soon interrupted in the 5th inning of play. The rain delay lasted nearly 2 and 1/2 hours before play resumed at 11pm.

Those fans who stuck around through the elements were then treated to free coffee and hot chocolate served by, the Red Sox and Liverpool owners, John Henry and Tom Werner.

The Red Sox eventually lost 5-3 in a game that ended at 2:45am.

Liverpool FC record £20 million loses in final year of Hicks-Gillett ownership

£20 million - The amount the club lost during Hicks and Gillett's last year of ownership. The losses occur during the financial year starting August 2009 to July 2010.

Hicks and Gillett bought the club promising a league title and to bring Liverpool back to the pinnacle of English football, where our beloved club belongs. However, these promise were broken, fans accused the two Americans of draining the club of its stature. Hicks and Gillett used the club to offset their borrowing and loaded the club with a mountain of debt. The club, part of it's £20 million loses, was paying close to £13 million in interest payments alone which rose nearly £5 million annually.

The Liverpool Echo exclusively obtained the accounts which reveal the extent of the losses endured. The cost to part company with former manager Rafael Benitez, who constantly battled the owners, and his staff nearly broke the £8 million pound mark.

Hicks and Gillett also promised the club a new stadium in Stanley Park which, unsurprisingly, never materialized.

They continued to suck the life out of a club that millions adored until the inevitable happened. In October 2010 their dark strangle hold of the club was lifted. FSG, an American sports group, came in to safe the club and give it new life, something it has accomplished in its short tenure as owners.

FSG re-payed close to £200 million in outstanding debt to The Royal Bank of Scotland an lowered interest payments to £3 million annually. Suddenly things looked brighter around the club and under Kenny Dalglish the team is flourishing.

A round up of some of today's financial figures:

Club revenue is up by £7 million from £177m to £184m (not including £81m shirt sponsorship deal)
Profit on player return of nearly £23m
Media revenues up by £5m to £80
Administration expenses rose £20m from £162m to £182m (mainly player contract extensions)

These are just some of the many points carried out in the financial aspect of the club. For more information please refer to the Liverpool Echo.

Ian Ayre, former Commercial Director, said:

“As much as we were well aware of the difficulties surrounding these accounts, everyone in the world is now aware of what has been achieved since.
“The club is now in an excellent position to move forward.”

The chase for Juan Mata heats up

Liverpool target, Juan Mata, looks set to leave Valencia this summer. Valencia, who had to sell David Villa and David Silva to Barcelona and Manchester City respectively, now look set to lose another one of their stars.

It is being reported there is a buy-out clause in Mata's contract believed to be around 23 million euros and Valencia would be forced to sell despite their reluctance. Skysports.com reported Liverpool are one of the clubs interested in the winger as are other clubs including Manchester City and Sevilla.

According to the players father, the player is generating alot of interest.

"The race to sign my son has hit fever pitch and is still increasing," said Juan Mata's father.

Maxi looks to stay at Anfield

Liverpool's Argentinian winger, Maxi Rodriguez, says he is happy at the Merseyside club and wants to see out the remaining 2 years on his contract.

Maxi, who has scored 4 goals in his last 2 games, including a hat-trick in Liverpool's 5-0 over Birmingham 2 weeks ago, has been in fine form for the Reds as they push for a Europa League place. With Liverpool's win over Newcastle, thanks to a goal from Maxi, they leapfrogged Tottenham for 5th place, their highest position all season.

Rodriguez arrived in January of 2010 from Athletico Madrid and has two years remaining on his current deal, two years which Maxi plans on seeing out. With rumors of a clear out in the Liverpool squad, many feel Rodriguez could be one of the many to go.

“I am really happy here,” said Maxi.
“The people have treated us really well. The type of life we have here, the way of life, is very different to what we were used to after nine years in Spain but I am enjoying everything.
“How can you not enjoy it? I am at a great club and it is great to play here.”

If Maxi can maintain his current form for the remainder of the season I see no reason why Liverpool wouldn't finish 5th. It also couldn't hurt Maxi's case to stay beyond this season. Despite not making a huge impact since arriving from Athletico Madrid, Rodriguez has been in some good form during patches of the season.
With Liverpool looking to rejuvenate the squad this summer, and wide players a high priority, time will only tell what the future holds for Maxi.

Juventus could pull out of Aquilani deal

According to Sky Sports Italia, Juventus are believed to have told Liverpool they are unwilling to pay the buy-out fee of £14.2 million agreed apon last summer when the Rossenaries took the player on a season long loan.

As expected, Juventus have been unwilling to pay a price they feel is to high. Aquilani, who was signed for around £20 million from Roma in 2009, has been arguably one of Juventus' best players this season as he has put in some stellar performances.

The general manager for Juventus, Giuseppe Marotta, said:

"There is a buy-out clause that has to be activated by May 15. We'll try to reach an agreement before the deadline.

"I can certainly say we will not sign Aquilani for the sum set by Liverpool."

I personally feel the fee is a just price for a player who has played well for the majority of the season. As talked about a few days ago, AC Milan could also make a move for the player as they look to replace Andre Pirlo. If Juventus are unwilling to pay the fee agreed upon last year then Liverpool should keep the player. I would gladly welcome the lad back to Anfield and hope he can make an impact as Liverpool look to break back into the top four next season.

Sami Hyypia retires at the age of 37

Liverpool legend, Sami Hyypia, announced his retirement from professional football and brings an end to his wonderful playing career.

Sami has always held a special place in the hearts of many Liverpool fans after a decade with the Reds. Signed from Willem II in 1999 for a fee of £2.5 million, Hyypia made his name as a dominant figure in the Liverpool back line. While he never won the league with Liverpool, he has won plenty with the club. He was apart of the historic treble winning team in 2001 and the amazing Champions League win in 2005. He also captained the club for a spell from 2001 to 2003 before Steven Gerrard took over that role.

"The decision to retire grew during the season,"

"I had no interest any more to go elsewhere to play.

"There are no regrets. Thanks to all those who have helped during the course of my career and to my relatives a big thank you, without family and friends it would not have been possible."

Sami has now set his sights on coaching as he looks to get his coaching license

"I must get a coaching licence and then I get the experience of Leverkusen and the national team coaching.

"I'm really happy about this. All who know me know I put myself fully into it. It is 100% or nothing."

Kenny to be given job on permanent basis

According to The Daily Mail, Dalglish looks set to secure the managers job on a permanent basis this week.

Since Kenny's return to the club, Liverpool have seen a resurgence around Anfield. Liverpool are unbeaten at home this year under Kenny and now find themselves back in a European qualification place after their 3-0 win over Newcastle, Sunday morning. While the Europa League is not what the club really wants, it should provide as a stepping stone to reclaim their place back in the Champions League next season.

Reports in Italy suggested that Porto boss Andre Villas Boas would be appointed in the summer and that he had rejected a move to manage Roma because he has already signed a contract with Liverpool.

However, Villas Boas has recently rejected these claims and it has always looked to be Kenny's job for the taking. It's unsure how long the contract could last for but it should prove vital to help stake a major claim next season.

Premier League results for Sunday, May 1st

 Birmingham 1 - 1 Wolverhampton:
Birmingham held on with 10 men to take a point out of a match the visitors dominated in. Fletcher gave Wolves the lead 7 minutes in from the penalty spot to give the relegation threatened club a great start. However, the lead didn't last long as 20 minutes later Larrson evened the scoring for Birmingham. Joy didn't last long though as Gardener found himself seeing red 2 minutes after Birmingham were back to level terms. Wolves dominated the majority of the game and surely feel its 2 points dropped rather than 1 point gained.

Manchester City 2 - 1 West Ham:
Manchester City edged closer to sealing their Champions League place with a hard fought victory at The Eastlands. City got off to a great start by finding themselves 2-0 up after 15 minutes. A 30 yard thunderbolt from Nigel De Jong and an own goal from Lars Jacobsen gave West Ham a mountain to climb. Demba Ba gave West Ham hope after pulling a goal back but City were to strong for them in the end. West Ham still remain rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table as relegation draws closer.

Arsenal 1 - 0 Manchester United:
Arsenal put in a great performance that seen them run out 1-0 winners at The Emirates. Aaron Ramsey put a dent into United's title hopes after finishing his goal well just before the hour mark. In a game that held more importance for Chelsea rather than Arsenal, after their 2-1 defeat to Bolton last week, we seen Arsenal dominate the possession and bounce back. The door is now wide open for the title with Chelsea 3 points behind Manchester United. Next week's game now holds even more importance as Chelsea and United do battle in what looks like a winner takes all match.

Reds ease past Newcastle to move into 5th spot

Liverpool continued their strong run of form under Kenny Dalglish with a comfortable 3-0 win over Newcastle at Anfield.

Liverpool came into the match knowing a win would move them up into 5th, ahead of Tottenham after their 2-1 loss at Stamford Bridge Saturday afternoon. Goals from Maxi Rodriguez, Dirk Kuyt and Luis Suarez sealed the three points and ensured Liverpool moved into the final European qualification place.

Liverpool started well and were rewarded with a goal from Maxi, 10 minutes in, as it took a deflection off a Newcastle defender and into Tim Krul's net. Kuyt stretched Liverpool's advantage just after the break by slotting home from the spot.

Man of the match, Luis Suarez, made sure of all 3 points when he took his goal well after playing a few passes with Dirk Kuyt and gliding the ball under the diving Krul from 10 yards out.

Andy Carroll, who didn't start, came on with 20 minutes left to play in front of angry Newcastle supports who where left disappointed after his departure. The only thing that was missing, from Liverpool's impressive 3-0 victory over Newcastle, was Andy Carroll's name on the score sheet against his former club.

Despite Newcastle's advantage in possession, they couldn't create any chances to trouble the Liverpool goal. Pepe Reina only had one save to deal with all afternoon as Newcastle couldn't find the target.

Liverpool now look to be favorites to take the final European place despite Tottenham's game in hand.
